Name:
Wally
Age:
37

Drug of Choice:
  Lortab

How did you become addicted?
I had surgery a couple of years ago. The doctor prescribed Lortab 7.5. They really helped with the pain after surgery, but I also really liked the way they made me feel.

I figured I could only get a 100 most
months, except for getting some extra from family and friends. I started taking 2 a day and my highest was most times not more than 4 a day. I would take all 4 as soon as I woke up in the morning. A few times especially on vacations I would take more 8-10 some days. I took Lortab on a regular basis for 2 and a half years.

Your turning point? (What made you choose recovery?)
I knew that I could not perform at my job 100% while on these drugs.I knew I wasn't being the best husband I could be. They initially make you happy, but they also cloud the mind and make you weak as far as complex thoughts and they take away your resolve. It was also affecting my marriage, though she knew I had a problem she mostly overlooked it. I saw anger come out in me sometimes that I never had displayed. They made up moody its a roller coaster of emotions.

Tell us about your recovery.
I weaned off for 3 days and then after 2 days with nothing my head was starting to clear. The pain is awful, cold sweats, insomina, nerviousness, severe depression and a fear of losing everything. Then things started getting better. I could see more clearly how important being sober was. My energy level was coming back. I flushed the last remaining pills, it wasn't easy, after all those times trying to get them to watch them flushed was hard, but the best decision. My world is alive again.

Your advice to others?
The first few days to a week depending on your addiction is hell. My addicition was an average of 4 per day, but all at once. It doesn't take 10 or 20 a day to get hooked. You must stop taking them.

I had to keep working a full schedule and for me that is 60+ hrs a week and it was hell. I know many will NOT seek professional treatment so I would say get some time off work, start to wean off the drug and then stop. You can kick it, just know that it may be one of the worst experiences at first you have ever had. Though when your body is clean you will have your life back again, your old self happy, secure, confident and a bright future.

If you can't or won't seek professional help find at least 1 friend and have them help you through it, for me it was my wife. Once you leave you can never return to these drugs, you are clean and have won, but you must keep winning each day and every dau from now on. Get your LIFE back!
