How did you become addicted?
I tore my acl in a volleyball game my senior year in high school. My surgeon misdiagnosed me and put a screw in the wrong place in my knee. Last month I had my eighth knee surgery to correct the original problem. Doctors have kept my vicodin supply full for eight years now.

Your turning point? (What made you choose recovery?)
About ten months ago my vicodin problem became very serious. I discovered a "doctor" who would give me pills with no questions asked. Not only could I get more pain killers, but I could get more potent pain killers. This was trouble. I am a high school English teacher. Everyday when the school day came to a close my body waited for that fix. I felt like I was slowly killing myself. I told myself after my next surgery--I'm through.

Tell us about your recovery.
One week after my knee surgery, I got into recovery. I was unable to walk still, but I had never been so determined to do something in my life.

Your advice to others?
Use the pain to your advantage. Anyone who has expirenced opiate withdrawals knows it is the worst thing that could happen to a person. Make the pain your enemy and fight it. The pain is there to remind you why the drug is so evil and why you need to fight harder. If you want to be free bad enough, you can do it.
